An apple crisp satisfies fall cravings better than almost any other dish, especially when they’re made with extraordinary Green Dragon Apples. These heirloom apples grow in Oregon’s dramatic Mount Hood wilderness, where snow-fed waters and crisp mountain air nurture the trees.
Until recently, if you wanted to taste this heirloom Japanese variety, you needed to venture to Oregon or Asia. We traveled to the Pacific Northwest and discovered its magic. Spring-green, speckled, perfectly crisp and sumptuously sweet, the apple’s flavor included notes of pineapple and pear. It tasted too good to keep secret. This easy crisp makes a great weeknight dessert. You probably have all the ingredients on hand, except the apples. Pop it in the oven before dinner and by the time you’ve finished, it will be ready to eat!
Green Dragon Apple Crisp
This simple apple crisp tastes perfect on a chilly fall evening. We also love swirling it into our yogurt for breakfast the next morning!
- 4 tablespoons Butter (plus more for buttering the dish )
- 2/3 cup rolled oats (use old-fashioned)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon flaked sea salt
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 4 Green Dragon Apples
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 2 qt. baking dish or 8” skillet and set aside.
- First, make the topping. Cut the butter into small cubes. In a bowl, stir together sugars, oats, cinnamon and salt. Using a microplane, grate nutmeg and zest lemon directly over the oat mixture. Add cubed butter and mix into the other ingredients until evenly distributed. Refrigerate.
- Core the apples and cut into ½” slices and toss with the sugar and flour. Spread the apples in the dish and cover with the topping.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes, until apples are tender and the topped is browned and crispy.
